Affordable Housing Project: 416 Lakeshore
On November 20, 2009, the governments of Canada and Ontario made a public announcement under the Affordable Housing Program. Now that the announcement has been made, we are pleased to advise that CMHA Nipissing has been approved for funding to acquire and renovate a motel to accommodate 20 tenants. The disappearance of boarding home housing resources in our community during the last two years has prompted CMHA Nipissing to develop this alternative model of congregate housing.
416 Lakeshore offers 20 individualized, self-contained units while also providing communal areas and activities that create social opportunities and lessens the potential for isolation and loneliness. CMHA Nipissing believes that housing for adults living with mental illness is most successful when it is designed to recognize that each person’s recovery is personal and individualized. This housing model acknowledges that some people prefer to live with others while having space of their own.
416 Lakeshore was open for occupancy on April 1st, 2010 and was filled within 2 weeks. We encourage anyone who is interested in being considered for 416 Lakeshore housing to fill out a Housing Interest Application and return it to CMHA Nipissing. We currently have a wait list of interested applicants, but, since different rooms may have different tenancy requirements, we will be filling any spaces that become available by matching the most appropriate applicant with the available unit.
