This service involves several programs offering support and case management to people with mental illness and addictions who have come into contact with the law. Our services have been designed to have specialized case managers positioned throughout the justice system – from pre-charge diversion, support in court and diversion plans, to discharge planning and case management following custody or treatment in the Forensic Program. Our services operate in close collaboration with key partners such as the provincial Crown Attorney, North Bay Regional Health Centre Mental Health and the Law Service, North Bay Jail, Probation and Parole, lawyers, police services and other mental health service providers.
Our Justice Services include:
Adult Court Support
The Mental Health Court Worker assists people with mental illness and addictions or symptoms of mental illness and addictions who are dealing with criminal matters. Court Support helps people navigate the justice system and provides consultation with criminal justice system staff. This support is offered in North Bay, Sturgeon Falls and Mattawa.
Mental Health Diversion Program
This program is for individuals with pending criminal charges and is accessed through the Mental Health Court Worker. With approval from the Crown Attorney’s Office, individuals’ charges may be put on hold while they are diverted from the court system to mental health and other community supports. The Mental Health Diversion Case Manager provides case management support over the course of the diversion plan which typically lasts 6-12 months. When the diversion plan has been completed the charges are revisited in court.
Release From Custody Program
This program provides mental health screenings, facilitates psychiatric consultations, and provides discharge planning to individuals with serious mental illness and addictions or symptoms of mental illness who are in custody at North Bay Jail. The Release From Custody Case Manager also provides brief case management to individuals upon their release from custody in order to connect them to community services and supports. Referrals for this program primarily come from individuals in custody, North Bay Jail Health Care, CMHA Court Support, or mental health service providers.
Transitional Case Management
This program is operated jointly with the North Bay Regional Health Centre – Mental Health and the Law Forensic Program. The Transitional Case Manager works with a multi-disciplinary team and provides discharge planning and case management services to individuals transitioning from the Forensic Program into the community. This program is accessed through the Forensic Program.
Youth Court Support and Mental Health Diversion
This program is intended for youth with mental illness and addictions or those experiencing symptoms of mental illness and addictions who have pending criminal charges. The aim of this program is to divert youth from the court system to community supports. The Youth Mental Health Court Worker assists youth in navigating the justice system, accessing community supports, and supports youth over the course of their diversion plan.
