North Bay, ON – The Canadian Mental Health Association Nipissing Regional Branch (CMHA Nipissing) is pleased to have invited RentSmart Ontario to North Bay to provide training to members of their Housing Success Team and staff from other community agencies that provide housing supports. The training is highly interactive and focuses on developing the training skills to help individuals become reliable tenants; reducing evictions and damages and increasing housing stability. It also quickly gets participants ready to teach the RentSmart model courses and, by the end of the 4 day workshop, the trainees will be RentSmart Educators (Train the Trainer) and able to deliver the RentSmart model as a Community Educator.
“Now that we will have Community Educators, we will be able to give our clients additional tools to increase their housing stability. Everyone deserves a safe place to call home and it is important to us (CMHA Nipissing) that everyone has a home. The clients who participate in the RentSmart course will earn a certificate that they can share with current or potential landlords to show that they have taken the time to learn how to be a better tenant. We are hoping that this will build better relationships between tenants, landlord and community supports.” – Jenny Leblond, Executive Director, CMHA Nipissing
CMHA Nipissing provides both transitional and permanent housing opportunities and currently works with 33 different private landlords. CMHA Nipissing is implementing the RentSmart ‘Ready to Rent’ certificate program as part of our Housing Success Service. We anticipate using it for all new CMHA Nipissing rent supplement tenants as well as for current tenants who have a difficult housing history. With this certification program we look to strengthen and build new and existing relationships with landlords and offer them an alternative intervention that could help mitigate tenancy issues before an eviction notice is needed. Our hope is that, with time and recognition, this certificate will become an accepted and sought after letter of reference for our tenants, especially those who have no other positive housing references to draw upon.
